Bi-functional and poly-functional reactive dyes are having a long time to do
Subhash Bhargava,
Chairman and Managing Director of Colorant Limited
In our continuous endeavor of presenting in depth perspectives of different segments of textile value chain, this time we are focusing on the reactive dyes manufacturing and its application. We all know how important reactive dyes are for the dyeing factories. Many questions have been popping around to Bangladesh Textile Today technical team, many of which are from readers. And so BTT takes the opportunity to meet one of the remarkable expert in reactive dyes sectorMr. SubhashBhargava. He is thechairman and managing director of Colorant Limited. Colorant is an India based company manufacturing, exporting and distributing dyestuffs, especially reactive dyes. Other than his company, Mr. Subhash is well known as an expert in the reactive dyes manufacturing industry. Subhash is a textile graduate having long experience in textile manufacturing and dyestuff manufacturing to marketing. Bangladesh Textile Today meets him to drag out insights of the reactive dyeing sector; manufacturing, innovations, market, distribution to end use; it has covered all most everything. Bangladesh is one of the biggest reactive dyes importers in the world. And so, it is important for our readers to know about its manufacturers.
Colorant started its journey in 1999 and now it has become one of top five reactive dyes manufacturers in India for its domestic market. Subhash was introducing his company at the beginning of the conversation. He added that the company is focused in export as well and so we are doing great in many markets including Bangladesh. Colorant products are GOTS certified, the manufacturing units are Oekotex and BSCI certified and it also has ISO certifications and it is producing safe and efficient products for top brands in the world, he added. Below is a brief from his quotes summarized on topics mentioned.
History of reactive dyes manufacturing in India:
At the time of independence total consumption of dyestuffs was met from imports from countries like Japan, Germany, Switzerland and UK. History of dyestuffs manufacturing started in India in the year of 1952 when Atul and Emma dyechem emerged as a maiden player with a modest capacity. ICI a British based company started manufacturing of reactive dyes after its invention in 1962. And after six years of reactive dyes invention, Atul went a joint venture with ICI to manufacture reactive dyes in India for the first time ever. The collaboration company was called Atik Industries Ltd. And that was the beginning of reactive dyes manufacturing in India and today, India is a major country as per as reactive dyes manufacturing in concerned. From 1977 to 1980s there was a tremendous growth in dyestuff manufacturing in India. Almost 1500 units come up in operation mostly in medium and small segments. And it has provided a quantum so that India has been recognized by the world as a reactive dyes producing country. Unfortunately in the same years we didn’t have reasonable level of backward integration. China in fact started very late; by the year 1980. And today these two countries are catering to entire world for the requirements of reactive dyes.
Current pattern of Indian reactive dyes manufacturing industry:
India is contributing around 11 percent of global dyestuff demand. After a rapid growth of the Indian reactive dyes manufacturing in 1980s its scenario has been started to change since the year 1995 when the environmental issues have been introduced. Now number of factories has been reduced to 600 from 1500 but remember the capacity has been extended. More and more medium to large size units have come up. It is a result of mergers and consolidation also. And this trend will continue.
Demand side of the reactive dyes:
Fortunately domestic (Indian) consumption of reactive dyes is increasing along with its export market. There are two reasons for that, number one India is having a flourishing textile industry and it is growing and number two direct dyes, sulfur dyes, naphthalene dyes, they are diminishing and reactive dyes are replacing. Even in the global market all those three dyes have been replaced by reactive dyes.
Limitations and strength of reactive dyes:
We know that reactive dyes have remarkable limitations especially in exhaust dyeing; it consumes a lot of salt and soda and water in after wash. And it is a concern in the reactive dyes application industry. We know that fixation percentage is also low which is 72 to 80 percent. It means at least 25 percent of unused hydrolyzed dyestuffs are going into drain. So, these are the limitations of the product. However, the new chemistry has been emerged, the fluorine chemistry. But it is very expensive and successful commercialization will take a long time.

But it has to be noted that fixation efficiency of reactive dyes has really been increased these days. Earlier when it was 60 to 70 percent now it can be like 80 percent as I have mentioned. It has become possible due to the chemical engineering done in dyestuff manufacturing and due to the new technologies used in textile processes. Both has worked together and has developed it. Fifteen years back processers were using 1:15 liquor ratio machines and now they are using on an average to 1:6. And in case of dyes, earlier we were using cold brand dyes where fixation was only 55 to 60 percent in medium and deep shades, vinyl sulphun dyes where fixation was not more than 65 percent. And then we were using bi-functional and poly functional dyes, their fixation was definitely more than 70 to 75 percent. So, it is an improvement. These poly-functional dyes work in medium temperature at 40 to 60 degree Celsius, so the energy requirements also have come down.
New developments in reactive dyes:
For the last four five years we have been focusing and promoting fluorine based reactive dyes. Initially it was a myth that these dyes are only for light shades and usable where high light fastness is required. But the fact is, they are environment friendly reactive dyes. Their fixation can reach to 90 to 93 percent. Fluorine based reactive dyes can be used in continuous process also. Now we have come up with a new range which is a combination of fluorine and bi-functional dyes. It can be used for medium, deep and extra deep shades too. And it can give better yields; fixation goes up to 85 percent. Of course commercial compulsions are there in the end of the processer but we are getting fair success in the market. The textile processers who are working for the leading brands are happily accepting our proposals.
Commercial challenges for efficient dyes:
For high efficient options, still dyestuff cost is potentially high for the processers even though they consider the saved fixed dyes if they compare with existing commodity dyes. But definitely the high fixation dyes will provide all round better fixation properties. And down the drain effluent processing cost is less. Fixation properties of fluorine based and combination dyes are beyond the comparison with the commodity dyes, it is indeed a different level. So, many brands are accepting these but non brands are not trying.
Future reactive dyes:
I feel present bi-functional and poly-functional dyes are having a long time to do. At least they have one more decade because no new molecules have come up. And these are technically and commercially viable. And these are going to have a good time. With the support of processing technologies they can improve in environmental issues also.
Bangladesh textile market:
I must say that it is an established market, it is no more emerging. And everyone in the world wants to be here. So, colorant is not any exception. We are here for last ten years, and now we want to have a better share in the market. Through last ten years I have seen positive changes in the industry. Technology is improving, most of the new plants which have come up in recent years, they have the best technology available in the world. And quality of the product is improving. Starting from basic t-shirt now, the country is producing practically everything. So, we are really happy to be here and we foresee a very good future of the Bangladesh textile industry.
Quality consistency of Indian dyes:
I know product strength and other quality consistency is very important for dye houses. Batch to batch inconsistency badly affect their operation process and increases reprocessing risk. Indian companies can be divided in two classes. One, who are selling under their own brand name; they have really updated them as per as batch to batch variation is concern. They are meeting all requirements of top global brands and successfully serving all multinational companies. And secondly, the producers which do not have their own mark and mainly are working for the trading companies. Even today quality is an issue with them, because they are always working with the compulsion of the price. Their commercial compulsion is always over the quality compulsion. And over the time; the first segment, the brand producers are becoming more prominent day by day. In the domestic market they are covering 70 to 75 percent of the demand. The value chain is becoming more organized and identified, as every company now has to have basic certifications.
Reactive dyes in ZDHC:
On behalf of reactive dyestuff manufacturers in the world, I can tell you that reactive dyes as a whole are now very safe. Barring PCA which to be monitored, none of the banned amines are now present in the system. So, they are very safe. Ecological profiles of all current reactive dyes are really supportive to the initiative, Zero Discharge to Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC). Even reactive dyes manufacturing units are also environmentally safe. For example our forth unit which is in operation now is zero discharge. As a green initiative in our unit two we are putting 25KW solar plant. Along with the government there are other agencies who are working to help the sector to become more environment friendly by reducing its hazardous load on the environment.
